Baikka Beel Travel Guide

Baikka Beel Travel Guide

Baikka Beel is a wetland sanctuary located at the Hail Haor in the northeast region of Bangladesh.  The Hail Haor extends from 4000 to 14000 hectares in the monsoon, with Baikka Beel sanctuary covering only 170 hectares of land.  The main purpose of this sanctuary is to maintain the eco system of the wetland, and to create a sustainable livelihood for the local community.  Over 190 species of birds and 100 species of fish have recently been recorded in the area.

During winter, many thousands of migratory birds from foreign countries and within Bangladesh travel to the wetland, living there temporarily to avoid colder climates.  The sanctuary is very popular with birdwatchers, who travel to Baikka Beel in large numbers during the winter season.

Baikka Beel is popular with tourists for birdwatching, and has watch towers for the convenience of visitors.  Visitors also enjoy boating and generally experiencing the beauty of wetlands life.  An entry fee is applicable to enter the sanctuary.  A private boating service is available – mainly in the monsoon season.  The cost to hire a boat varies between BDT. 200-500 for a one-hour ride.  However, in order to avoid disturbing the birds, boating within the sanctuary is not encouraged.

Travel to Hail haor is available all year round, but for birdwatchers winter is by far the preferred season to visit.  Although accessible by road, the road is narrow and and in poor repair.
