Sonargaon Tour: Sonargaon makes an excellent day trip from Dhaka, combining countryside, culture, archaeology and adventure.  Located 27 km southeast of Dhaka on the banks of the Ganges delta, it was the administrative capital of Bengal before being moved to Dhaka in 1610.  The Buddhist ruler Danujamadhava settled in Sonargaon (then called Suvarnagrama) in the mid-13th century. Muslim settlers arrived towards the end of the 13th century, with several Muslim rulers conquering the region between the 14th and 17 th centuries. Among these rulers were Bahadur Shah, Fakhrudddin Mubarak Shah, Ilyas Shah, and Isa Khan.

In the 19th century the British established a city in Sonargaon, naming it Panam city.  As a busy trading place, it became an important centre for the manufacture and export of kantha (traditional indigo-dyed Muslin) and was the finest in the region.  Hindu traders built many fine houses in the city and walking its broad street today will summon a feeling of elegance in this beautiful city.

Sonargaon Tour will start in Dhaka at 8.00 am, with a journey time of approximately one and a half hours to Sonargaon (depending on traffic conditions). The trip will start in Dhaka at 8.00 am, with a journey time of approximately one and a half hours to Sonargaon (depending on traffic conditions). Our first stop will be to visit glorious Panam city, where we will take a peaceful walk along the old streets and explore the beautiful architecture closely.  There’s time for a cup of tea before moving on to an old Hindu temple nearby, after which we will take a 15 minute journey to visit magnificent Goaldi Mosque.  The mosque was built in 1519 by Sultan Hussain Shah during the Sultan’s dynasty in Bengal.  Later we’ll visit the Bangladesh folk art and craft museum before travelling to the banks of the Meghna River (approximate 30 minute journey).  You will then take a boat ride on the Meghna River during which we will have lunch, or if you prefer lunch can be arranged at a local restaurant.  Time permitting, we will visit a weaver’s village to see traditional weaving on our return to Dhaka.  Arrival in Dhaka will be at approximately 5.00 pm.
